A group loan works because of the group. When a few women who trust each other borrow together and support each other’s repayment, they can often get credit that would be hard to get alone.
But the loan is only as strong as the group behind it. This guide explains how to form a women’s group for a women group loan: who to invite, what to agree on, what to prepare and how to apply.
What Is a Women’s Group Loan?
A women group loan, sometimes called a small group loan or joint group loan, is a loan given to a small group of women who each borrow for their own work and share responsibility for repayment. The group’s mutual trust takes the place of the property or collateral a bank might ask for.

How Many Women Do You Need?
It depends on the lender. For HindSe’s Group Loan, a group needs at least 5 women. Our product page lists groups of 5 to 10 members.
A group that is too small may not meet the lender’s minimum. A group that is too large becomes harder to manage and coordinate. Most women find that a group of 5 to 10 works well.
Step 1: Start With People You Already Know and Trust
The strongest groups are built on real relationships. Start with women who:
- Live or work in the same neighbourhood
- Have known each other for some time
- Are respected and reliable in their community
- Have a regular source of income
Avoid forming a group only to meet the number. If one member struggles, the whole group feels it.
Step 2: Choose Members Carefully
Before you invite someone, think about these questions:
- Does she have a steady income, even if small?
- Has she repaid money she borrowed before, to family, shops or lenders?
- Is she honest about her income and her plans?
- Will she attend meetings and take responsibility?
- Is she between 18 and 55 years old? (HindSe’s current age range for group loans.)
You don’t need everyone to run the same kind of business. A group of a tailor, a tiffin cook, a beautician and a shopkeeper can work well together. What matters is that each member can repay.
Step 3: Hold a First Meeting
Once you have a few interested women, meet and talk openly about:
- How much each woman wants to borrow and why
- How each woman will repay, and from what income
- What happens if someone falls behind
- How often the group will meet
- Who will coordinate with the lender
Write the key points down so that everyone is clear.
Step 4: Understand What Joint Responsibility Means
This is the most important step. In a group loan, members share responsibility for repayment. If one member can’t pay on time, the group is expected to help.
Every woman should understand this clearly before she joins. Ask the lender to explain it in simple words, and don’t sign anything you don’t understand.
Step 5: Agree on Simple Group Rules
A few shared rules keep a group strong:
- Everyone pays her EMI on time. Set a reminder system, such as a group message or a meeting before due dates.
- Members tell the group early if there is a problem. Early warning gives the group time to help.
- Meetings are regular. Even a short monthly meeting keeps everyone connected.
- Money matters stay transparent. Keep records of who paid and when.
- Respect each other’s privacy. Share only what the group needs.
Step 6: Prepare Your Documents
Each member should keep these ready:
- KYC documents (identity and address proof, such as Aadhaar)
- Bank account details
- Passport-size photographs
- Details of her work or income
A lender may ask for other documents, so confirm the exact list with them. HindSe also asks for a cheque from each borrower as a repayment security measure.

Common Mistakes When Forming a Group
- Choosing friends who don’t have a steady income. Friendship alone isn’t enough to repay a loan.
- Joining without understanding joint responsibility. Ask questions first.
- Letting one person manage everything. Share the work so the group doesn’t depend on one woman.
- Ignoring early warning signs. Talk to the group as soon as someone struggles.
- Borrowing more than you can repay. Take only what your business can support.
